Beetle stacking rules

A Beetle moves only one space, but climbing changes which color controls a hex, freezes the insect below and introduces a vertical version of the sliding gate.

A Beetle moves one adjacent space and may enter an occupied hex by climbing onto it. The top piece controls the entire stack for placement and movement interaction, while every covered insect is unable to move. A Beetle can later move one space across another stack or descend to the ground, provided the height-aware gate is open.

The essential stack rule

Only the top insect acts and only its color is exposed. Everything underneath remains in the hive but is covered.

How a Beetle climbs

From ground level, a Beetle may move to any adjacent occupied hex that it can reach through the doorway between the two shared neighboring sides. It goes on top of the existing insect or stack rather than replacing it.

The Beetle still needs its own Queen in play, and a ground Beetle cannot leave if it is the only bridge holding two hive regions together. Climbing does not override the One-Hive rule.

Who controls a stack?

The color of the top piece controls the occupied coordinate. If an Onyx Beetle covers an Ivory Ant, that hex is exposed as Onyx. An Onyx reserve piece may potentially be placed beside it, while an Ivory reserve piece treats it as an opposing contact.

Control can change repeatedly. If an Ivory Beetle climbs onto that Onyx Beetle, the three-piece stack becomes Ivory on top. The insects below do not disappear; when the top Beetle leaves, the next exposed piece takes control.

Stack height is not piece count on the board

Three physical pieces in one stack still occupy one hex and provide one connection node for the One-Hive rule.

What happens to the covered insect?

A covered piece cannot move or use an ability. A covered Queen can still be surrounded: the six neighboring coordinates determine the win condition, and the Beetle on top does not remove the Queen from its coordinate.

Covering an opponent’s mobile Ant is a powerful pin because the Ant stays inactive until every piece above it moves away. Covering your own piece can also be useful if it lets a Beetle cross the hive, but it temporarily sacrifices that lower piece’s mobility.

Moving across the top

An elevated Beetle moves one adjacent hex just like a ground Beetle. It may go from one occupied stack to another, climb to a higher top or descend toward a lower top. It does not need an empty ground perimeter path because it is travelling on the hive.

A top Beetle is usually free from a bridge pin: removing it leaves the lower piece at the same coordinate, so the connection remains. If it is the only piece at its starting coordinate on the ground, the ordinary bridge test returns.

Height-aware gates

The “freedom to move” doorway has height. Compare the moving Beetle’s travel level with the two neighboring stacks that form the gate. If both gate stacks are taller than both the source level and destination level, the Beetle cannot squeeze between them.

This matters when climbing, crossing and descending. A Beetle does not gain unlimited passage simply because it can climb. For example, a ground Beetle trying to enter a low occupied hex between two two-piece towers is blocked: both sides rise above the move. If one side is lower or the Beetle is already high enough, the doorway may be open.

Visual shortcut

Imagine a flat tile moving horizontally at the higher of its source and destination surfaces. If both side walls extend above that travel plane, the gate is closed.

Descending to the ground

A Beetle may descend one adjacent step to an empty ground hex if the vertical gate permits it and the resulting position stays connected. A surrounded empty pocket can be reachable from above even though a ground Queen could never slide into it.

After descending, the Beetle behaves as a ground piece again. It may become a bridge and its next move must obey the ground-level doorway.

Three practical uses

  • Cover a defender: freeze the insect that can reach the last open Queen space.
  • Change placement ownership: cover an opposing edge piece so your reserve can grow beside the stack.
  • Cross congestion: move over occupied hexes when the ground perimeter is too slow or blocked.

The cost is tempo: Beetles move only one space. Choose the climb because the changed control or route matters now, not merely because height looks powerful.
